Maintenance of a screw conveyor middle bearing at a mechanical ship unloader

Task
On a mechanical ship unloader for cement and cement-like materials with an unloading capacity of 1,000 t/h and for ship sizes up to 50,000 dwt, all 5 centre bearings on the vertical screw conveyor were to be checked and replaced if necessary.
02.
Challenge
Accessibility was difficult because the vertical screw conveyor is more than 20 m high and could not be reached with the available hoists. In addition, the weight of a complete centre bearing of more than 30 kg made working at this height difficult.
03.
Solution
A special lift was ordered for working at great heights, which had a sufficiently large platform for two men to work on the centre bearing. The procedure for the work had to be described in detail in order to obtain permission from the port authority for this work.
